Yellow rattle is an annual, completing its life cycle in one year. In early spring the seeds germinate and grow quickly. As their roots develop underground, they seek out the roots of plants growing nearby, especially grasses. If you have too much grass in your wildflower meadow, Yellow Rattle will help suppress the grasses without using chemicals, hence it's known as ‘natures lawnmower’.

Establishment of wildflower mixes are not always immediate. Full establishment can sometimes take up to two or three years depending on the compilation of the mixture, site conditions, soil type, and husbandry input. Maintenance and management also have a major impact on how well and how quickly they establish.
Growing Tips
Yellow rattle can be a little tricky to get established. To ensure growth remove the thatch (the layer of dead grass and moss that builds upon the soil surface) to expose some bare soil by using a rake. The seeds must be sown by November as the seeds need about 4 months of temperatures dipping below 5 degrees Celsius.
When To Sow
Sow from March until September.
How To Grow
Step 1: Yellow Rattle can be sown straight into the ground where they are going to flower, so make sure you have prepared the seedbed properly by removing weeds, stones, and other debris.
Step 2: Rake the soil to ensure is a fine and crumbly consistency. You want to plant the seeds at a depth of 13mm and cover with soil.
Step 3: Very gently, water the whole area using a watering can, taking care not to wash your seeds away.
